Therapy

Image
I used to be wary about going to therapy and didn't really understand it. I would say many people feel the same way, and it holds them back from going. When I decided to attend therapy, it was because I was at the lowest point in my life, and I needed guidance on how to get out of it. It's a common misconception that you have to start therapy when something bad has happened in your life, or you have a mental illness. If I had known this, then I would've started therapy before I got to a bad place in my life so I could learn how to deal with and cope with it better. I do believe people are normalizing therapy, and the culture around it is getting less stigmatized. Everyone should go to therapy. Even if you have the perfect life or the crappiest one, therapy is meant to help you control, analyze, and reassess your emotions and actions towards things in your life. A lot of people also think they don't need therapy, but sometimes you have hidden trauma, toxic traits, or un...

Experience the Joy of Yoga

Image
People need to appreciate yoga more. Whether that be aerial yoga, yin yoga, or restorative yoga, these practices are so beneficial. I started going to yoga every Tuesday night at the UNF recwell. During this hour of practice, it is mostly yin yoga, which is just holding various poses for several minutes to connect and reach more specific parts of the body. Ever since I started going, I have felt so much more peaceful, and it's one of my favorite parts of the week.      I highly recommend trying some form of yoga. I know it can be nerve-wracking to try a class and have no idea what you're getting yourself into, but yoga is a very flexible and inclusive practice. Anyone can do it!       Here are some different types of yoga that you could try and see which ones are your favorite and work best for you! - Acro Yoga -Aerial Yoga -Hot Yoga -Power Yoga -Yin Yoga I've tried all these, and it's hard to pick a favorite. They all provid...

Fitness Tips and Tricks

Image
Fitness is tough to get used to, especially if you don't know where to start. I have some easy tips and tricks to share that might help you increase your habits and skills when it comes to physical activity.  Tip #1: Plan your workout routine. This could be right before you go to the gym and plan that day, or you could plan a whole week of workouts. For example, if I want to work on my legs that day, I will get on Pinterest or TikTok and find specific workouts that target the legs and right down in my notes app. Then, I will figure out how many sets and reps I want to do. It would look something like this- Deadlifts 3x12 (3 sets and 12 reps) Back squat 3x15 Dumbbell lunges 2x10 This helps you focus on a goal when you are at the gym and not wonder what's next or waste any time. Tip #2: Log your Workouts. Logging your workouts will help motivate you. You can either do a physical journal or log it in your notes app on your phone. Log how much time you spent in the gym, how many ...

How to be successful at the grocery store

Image
I'm the first to say that grocery shopping is overwhelming. When I walk into the vast store, I have no clue where to start. For the longest time, I would go in there without a plan. It was a big mistake. This would lead to me only buying snacks and maybe a random vegetable or two just to make the shopping cart look "balanced."      Once I got home and unloaded my so-called "groceries," I would stare at the pantry and fridge and wonder what I should eat that wasn't chips or ice cream. I would look at the sad little bell pepper I bought and feel bad that it wasn't going to a home that would eat it. I decided that's when I needed to change my strategy. Next time, I would walk into a grocery store with a plan.      Some things I incorporated into my shopping trip were first a list that I planned ahead of time. I would look up recipes on Pinterest, TikTok, Instagram, and Google and figure out the most realistic meal that I can make. I ...

Let's talk about physical activity and mental health

Image
Exercising is extremely important for both your physical and mental health. Although many people workout to change their physical appearance and improve their physical health, the majority don't realize that it's also helping their mental health. I remember feeling upset with my body and overall quality of life, and when I decided to start moving my body and trying different workouts, programs, and activities, I started to feel clarity, and my mood improved rapidly. Healthdirect, a government-funded website that provides information and advice about health, provides a simple explanation as to why your mental health improves with exercise, "Exercise causes your brain to release 'feel good' chemicals like endorphins and serotonin that helps improve your mood." Once you improve your mental health, reaching all your health and wellness goals will be easier.      I learned that I loved working out in the morning, so the first thing that I do when I w...

A healthy lifestyle

Image
To start off this blog, it's important to talk about how I overcame a sedentary lifestyle and became more active and healthy in my daily routines and how you can, too. It takes a lot of willpower and motivation to change your whole lifestyle. First, it takes a goal. You need to take a step back and look at what you need or want to change about your current routine or lifestyle. Personally, I felt lazy, dehydrated, unmotivated, and overall unhealthy from all the bad foods I've been eating. I had to write down everything I needed to change and set a realistic goal for myself. My first goal was that I wanted to drink 55 oz. of water a day. It's good to set a small goal first. In doing that, I bought myself a new water bottle and stopped buying sugary drinks. My next goal was to incorporate physical activity into my day. Again, I started out with a small goal of only doing physical activity for 25-30 minutes a day, 4x a week. Some things I would do during these 25-30 minutes a...
